Balm in Gilead

Wounds of the past
Only covered up temporarily
Just because I can't see the scars on the surface
Doesn't mean that the problem has healed properly

When careless words are spoken
They seem to open up the wounds again
Then I feel the pain deep down on the inside
Just when I thought the wound would mend

I hear that there is a balm in Gilead
Said to be the Son of Man
He has a salve for all sores they say
Healing power placed in the palm of his hand

He won't anoint your hurting place
And allow your wound to be healed
Until you remove the bandage of fear
And allow the problem to be revealed

If you're ever touched in that hurting place
And the pain you no longer feel
His anointing has healed the root of your problem
And with the balm of Gilead
He has allowed your wounds to heal
